OUR HISTORY

In 1865, at the end of the U.S. Civil War, Fr. Westerholt of St. John parish in Delphos began celebrating Mass once a month in what would soon become the village of Landeck. Peter Gengler is the one credited with making that request. The building used for Mass belonged to Sebastian Ley.

In 1866, the thirty-seven families in the area petitioned Bishop Rappe, of the Cleveland Diocese, for their own parish. He granted its establishment. They began construction of their church, a wood framed structure, under the direction of a Mr. Beckman. The parishioners provided most of the materials and labor, working when it did not interfere with their needed farm work. By Christmas Day, 1866, it became a suitable enclosure for celebrating Holy Mass.
